Santa Pod, England, September 05 – Lex Joon (Zaandam NL) made history becoming the first Dutchman ever winning a Top Fuel FIA Championship title. Joon is the first Dutchman in the history of autosport who has won a FIA title. Top Fuel is similar to F1, the highest level possible in this form of racing.

Joon began the last race of the 05 FIA Championship with a 37 points lead. Over Tommy Moller from Sweden. Lex Qualified fourth after the second day of qualifying was cancelled because of rain conditions. This gave him an extra 2 points lead (39) because Tommy his position was lower in qualifying.

Lex wanted to run low E.T. of the meeting because that would give the team an extra 5 points.
These point added with the 39 lead would give an extra round. (Each round is 20 points)
Round 1 Lex ran a 4.933 @ 304 MPH what was enough for low E.T. This record of the meeting was accomplished under sever conditions with the track not complete dry because of the weather conditions
Tommy Moller won the event after Lex was stopped due to a small oil leak at the startline in the second round. The two rounds the Dutchman already managed to add to his points total, was enough to secure the Championship.

The 05 season turned out to be a great first year for the new formed MPM Top Fuel team from the Netherlands.
The other teams entering the FIA Championship have in each of their country’s there own facilities, Lex Joon is the first Champion from a country that don’t have a permanent dragstrip.

The season started with a win at the Main Event, overcoming a huge wheelstand a several headgasket failures the team came home with the first win and a personal best entering the 4 second zone.

Finland we made it to the half Finals, a track that is tricky for the more high powered cars.
Sweden gave us the fastest side by side record in Europe and the quickest pass of the season 4.78 seconds, another personal best.

Norway was a rain out, Qualifying at the number 2 position with only one run made gave us a good position for race day, rain kept us from racing.

Hockenheim was fun, nothing about a Championship. Running a 4.88 at a track that had seen so much rain was awesome, Lex clicked it of at a 1000 ft, just to spare the car for the finals.

Finals, we set low ET and Top Speed: 304 mph, another personal best for Lex.
Leading the Championship from start till finish is another record we did break.
Going to Monaco at the end of our first season as an in depended team is the cream on the cake. Who would have thought at the beginning of this season that this would be the outcome!

Convincing Top Fuel debut by Lex Joon

Lex has made during the Easter Thunderball at Santa Pod on a convincing way his Top Fuel debut. In the colours of MPM Lex Joon not only reached the final of the Pro Fuel Shootout but was good for a new personal best of 5.045 seconds and 280 mile per hour!

Lex  Joon lines himself with these times into the European Top. The Thunderball was already a historical moment in the Dutch history of dragracing because it was the first time ever that a Dutchman drove a Top Fuel Dragster.

The Easter Thunderball was planned for Lex Joon as a preparation to the FIA European Championship which starts the end of May at  Santa Pod. Because the Dutchman never had run an Top Fuel Dragster and team  (CBD of Knut Soderquist) and crew where all new the Thunderball was a great way to get experience with the car and team.

On Saturday and Sunday one run was made. After a good burn out and an excellent start the half pass was made descent. At Easter Monday the first great time appeared on the scoreboards. After the half pass a ¼ mile time of 5,606 seconds and speed of 182 miles where good enough to run the final. This great site by site run delivered Lex a new personal best of  5,046 seconds and 280 miles an hour! Although this time was not enough to beat Andy Carter, the joy in the MPM-camp was big. With this achievement Lex will be a candidate for a high classification in the European Championship.

See the pictures of the Easter Thunderball in our photo gallery. Also Lex got many reaction which we posted in our fan mail.

Lex Joon a new competitor in the 2004 FIA European Top Fuel Dragster Championship

Zaandam, 28 January 2004. This season Lex Joon will be the first Dutch competitor in the history of his country to compete in Top Fuel Dragster, the Formula 1 of drag racing. Bearing the colours of MPM International Oil Company (MPM), Joon will be a competitor in the FIA European Top Fuel Dragster Championship.

The Dutchman will drive for the Carbon By Design team, which is owned by UK-based Swede Knut Soderquist. Racers from the Carbon By Design team finished numbers one and two in the 2003 European Championship.

“After our first season in Top Fuel Funny Car we decided to continue racing in the Top Fuel ranks”, says Lex. “However, the competition in the Funny Car class is not currently strong enough; there are not enough competitors and there is only a British Championship which is not good enough business-wise.

“After discussing different options with MPM ,we decided to make the move to Top Fuel Dragster. Top Fuel is the most extreme class in drag racing, it is the highest possible level of competition, and because of that it is the biggest challenge.

“Another reason is official FIA Championship status. This gives more opportunities for marketing expansion which makes it even more interesting.”

The FIA European Top Fuel Dragster Championship has a schedule of six races in five different European countries, and has been noted for particularly strong competition in the last couple of years.

As the top-rated class in drag racing, a Top Fuel programme benefits from its popularity and can always count on the most and best broadcasting on worldwide television networks.

With more than six thousand horsepower, Top Fuel Dragsters are the fastest-accelerating cars in the world. These quarter mile machines reach speeds over 320 miles per hour in less than 4.6 seconds.

The MPM Top Fuel Dragster can also be seen on Dutch soil on 10th and 11th July, when it will be in action at the MPM Internationals at Drachten.

Joon will use a car from the Carbon By Design Team in his quest to be the 2004 FIA European Top Fuel Champion. Joon has chosen the Carbon By Design team because this team have proven material and knowledge and had the number one and two cars in the 2003 Championship. With this in mind, Joon will be a serious candidate for the number one position this year.

Lex Joon competed successfully in FIA Top Methanol Funny Car. In 2002 he finished third in the FIA European Championship and was the European record holder in the class.

MPM, already partners when Joon took the wheel of a Fuel Funny Car, will be the main partner when Joon makes the step up into the Formula One of drag racing. “Without the partnership of MPM, this new programme would not have been possible” says Gerda Dijkstra, Team Manager of Lex Joon Racing.
